A state championship can be won without stepping onto a championship court. For Ardmore High School junior Teagan Combs and her 2026 varsity tennis teammates, the program’s Academic State Championship Award represented a major achievement built through commitment in the classroom as well as competition.
Combs said the award was especially meaningful because it marked the first time Ardmore tennis had earned the honor since 2013. For a student-athlete balancing two sports, the recognition reinforced the value of work that often happens away from game day.
“It’s an accomplishment that I’m very proud of,” Combs said.
Combs competes in both softball and tennis for Ardmore. On the softball diamond, she plays first base and third base, two positions that demand quick reactions, dependable defense and communication with teammates. Tennis adds another competitive outlet while requiring composure, focus and the ability to adjust after every point.
Playing both sports has helped Combs develop a mindset she can use well beyond athletics.
“My sport has taught me to overcome adversities and to keep a positive attitude,” she said.
That perspective is important in sports where mistakes are unavoidable. Combs said the best advice she has received is to have a short memory after making a mistake on the field or court. Rather than allowing one error to affect the rest of a game, match or season, she works to reset and focus on the next opportunity.
Combs draws inspiration from University of Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan, who helped lead the Longhorns to back-to-back Women’s College World Series national championships in 2025 and 2026. Kavan also became the first two-time Most Outstanding Player in WCWS history, providing an example of excellence and leadership for young softball players like Combs.
Closer to home, teammate Kynzi Mitchell has made a lasting impact on Combs. She describes Mitchell as the hardest worker, someone committed to everything she does and “my little ray of sunshine.”
Combs is also grateful for the coaches and teachers who help her grow. Her favorite teacher is current science teacher Coach Coberley, whom she said believes in her and pushes her to do her best.
She offered special appreciation to tennis coach Coach Vasquez and softball coach Coach Orso.
“They both focus on effort and growth more than a final win,” Combs said. “They see what you can do before you see it yourself.”
With that support, Combs continues to pursue success in the classroom, on the tennis court and on the softball field, one positive step at a time.
