Ardmore’s Alison Scott – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Express Pharmacy

Current music history and music theory teacher Alison Scott is teaching grades nine through twelve at Ardmore High School. Scott returned to her alma mater to teach music after performing as a full-time musician in another state.

“I am a 1996 graduate of Ardmore High School. I have been an educator for 15 years and l have spent all of this time in Ardmore. Prior to teaching I was a full-time professional bassoonist while also working as a licensed insurance adjuster. I performed with the Fort Smith, North Arkansas, and Enid Symphony’s full time, and have substituted for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Tulsa Symphony. I made the choice to move back to Ardmore specifically to teach at Ardmore City Schools and to be closer to my parents. I still perform locally in churches and volunteer with the Ardmore Little Theatre,” said Scott.

Like many of her peers, Scott said she loves being around the students and seeing them develop a love for music.

“I enjoy being able to help students learn to love and understand music better. I also enjoy making a positive impact on children’s lives and inspiring them to do better,” said Scott. “Witnessing the moment when the light switch flips because a student realizes they really enjoy music that they did not think they would.”

Scott received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma, and her master’s degree in Music, bassoon performance, from the University of Arkansas. For Scott, Ardmore holds more than just the memories of her own high school days.

“Ardmore is very different from most smaller Oklahoma cities. We have a very diverse group of students that thrive in our school’s environment,” said Scott.

Educators have the power to leave an impression on a person that can stick with them for life. Ask any teacher and they can point to a teacher they had who encouraged them to never stop learning.

“I have two, my high school band director Stan Stevenson, and my college band director Gene “Coach” Thrailkill,” said Scott.

Scott offers some advice of her own to any student who feels the calling of teaching.

“Teaching is a very rewarding career, and one of the only careers where you are able to share with students the subject you love while building lasting relationships.”
